Top 10 Ways to Play Outdoors

Yearning for some wide-open spaces? Human beings weren’t meant to be cooped up inside all day. We need sunshine, fresh air, and a nice, cool breeze — fluorescent lighting and artificial air conditioning just isn’t a worthy substitute. Check out some of our favorite ways to enjoy the Great Outdoors in Pontiac and Livingston County and schedule some much-needed quality time with Mother Nature!

1. Go Fishing

With the Vermilion River bisecting the city, Pontiac is a great place to cast a line in search of their next fishing story. The upper portion of the river (i.e., east of the Mill Street Dam) is home to excellent catfishing in the murky, muddy waters. West of the dam, the water clears up and is a prime spot to reel in some trophy smallmouth bass.

2. Kayaking & Canoeing

One of the best ways to unplug and soak in the grandeur of the Central Illinois outdoors is by floating peacefully downstream on the Vermilion River. Whether by kayak or canoe, floaters will enjoy gorgeous scenery ranging from Pontiac’s fabulous city parks to untamed areas that are home to wildlife such as bald eagles and herons. Bring your own vessel or rent one conveniently from Vermilion River Adventures.

3. Splish Splash at the Splash Pad

The Splash Pad at Humiston-Riverside Park (or Duck Park as the locals call it) is the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Splash Pad is free to visit.

4. Golfing

Schedule a tee time at The Oaks at River’s Edge, promising one of the top courses in Central Illinois. Featuring 18 holes — with nine-hole rates also available — across more than 160 acres, The Oaks has provided stunning vistas for golfers of all skill levels since its founding in 1921. More than 100 years later, both members and non-members are invited to enjoy high-quality golfing along with an on-site pro shop. Learn more about golfing in Pontiac.

From the shady comfort of Chautauqua Park to the river vistas at Humiston-Riverside Park, our city parks welcome couples, family, and friends to share a meal in the sunshine — just watch for the ants. 6. Disc Golf

With 18 holes spanning two city parks as well as the Vermilion River, Riverview Disc Golf Course promises one of the most unique and memorable disc golf experiences in the state. Created with input from local disc golf enthusiasts, the par 35/36 course carries players across one of our historic Swinging Bridges and promises a challenge for all skill levels.

7. Fly a Kite

Don’t let a gusty day keep you inside. Plenty of wide-open spaces around Pontiac offer a fantastic opportunity to fly a kite. Need to gear up first? Our local kite experts can help — stop by Route 66 Kites and browse their incredible selection of single-line, dual-line, quad-line, and power kites, plus accessories like spools, winders, wands, and tails.

8. Bike Ride Throughout Town

A bike ride through Pontiac is one of the best ways to take in the beauty of the historic neighborhoods and the lovely parks while getting some exercise.

9. Hike at Humiston Woods

Originally used as a scout camp and county picnic venue, Humiston Woods features 336 acres of hardwood forest and 8 acres of restored prairie with more than 160 species of native plants and wildlife throughout. Seven trails twist and wind through the wildlife area, each offering unique views and experiences.

10. Ice Skate on Block 59

The Ice Rink in Block 59 (the block south of the Historic Courthouse) is set up from mid-November through February. Ice Skates and skating aids are available for use for free. To add even more to the ambiance, Pontiac goes all out with their holiday decorations each year including lighted sculptures, a community tree, festive lighting and more.
