Kayaking & Canoeing

On the water

Winding from east to west and bisecting the city on its long, meandering journey to the Illinois River, the Vermilion River has long been a source of prosperity for Pontiac, powering the mills that once comprised the backbone of the city’s industry. More than that, however, the river has also provided a recreational destination for all ages. Generations of Pontiac residents have enjoyed leisurely days on the peaceful, flowing waters, paddling along the gentle currents or casting a line in search of their next fishing tall tale.

Where to Kayak & Canoe

The Vermilion River can be accessed via the boat ramp at Play Park, located near the intersection of East Grove and Locust streets. Additionally, kayakers and canoers can access the river near McDowell southwest of Pontiac.

Caution: The Mill Street Dam is located just a few blocks west of Play Park; another is located further downstream just west of the South Ladd Street bridge. Avoid these dams as they can pose a significant risk regardless of water level.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fish species can I expect to catch?
While the upper portion of the river (east of the Mill Street Dam) is home to channel catfish, the lower portion west of the dam is a haven for smallmouth bass, which are renowned for their tenacity and stubbornness when hooked.

What should I wear on the river?
Even on the hottest days, wet clothes can be uncomfortable, to say the least. Moisture wicking shirts that dry quickly are a great option in case of splashing or tipping. Paddlers may be tempted to wear sandals in the warm weather, but these can be easily lost if the vessel is tipped; trees and debris on the bottom of the river can also pose an injury risk. Closed-toe water shoes provide more security and safety.

How can I make my float trip more relaxing?
Vermilion River Adventures offers outfitted float trips that range from 6.75-mile trips from McDowell to Pontiac to short cruises around Chautauqua Park — vessels, safety gear, and shuttle service included. Learn more and book your trip today!
